HOWTO: Backup data and disk info before flashing firmware

Postby misioslaw » Mon Dec 12, 2005 7:48 pm

This is a small howto suggested by my problems with flashing firmware

History: My player defaultly not have a adressbook, after short time i found ready firmware with adressbook and stupidly flashed it to my player. after flashing my player reboots and i see on screen "Disk Error". access to all options in player has ben locked. i run "RDiskUpdate" tool but see "unknown flash type" message. Now i must format drive in my player. after formating "RDiskUpdate" flashed correctly old firmware, but i loss all data on drive.

Solution: before flashing make a dump of yours drive and partition data.
I found on the web small tool named "dd" http://uranus.it.swin.edu.au/~jn/linux/rawwrite/dd.htm (most linux users have dd in distribution).
DD helps make of a backup image of the USB drive to a harddisk.

Example for windows: (read complete USB drive to file)
dd if=\\.\X: of=c:\temp\usb1.img bs=1M
X is a letter of usb drive
now read only few megs (useful for restore old partition data after formating)

THIS WORKS! YOU MAY QUICK FORMAT DRIVE,FLASH CORRECT FIRMWARE AND RESTORE PARTITION INFO WITHOUT DATA LOSS

dd if=\\.\X: of=c:\temp\usb1.img bs=1M count=5
this read only first 5MB from drive
- Now for writting
dd if=c:\temp\usb1.img of=\\.\X: bs=1M count=5

for linux users:
Code: Select all
 dd --help
:lol:

Any asks,sugestions?

[quote="misioslaw"]for linux users:
Code: Select all
 dd --help
:lol:[ /quote]

Well, in Linux the syntax is almost the same:
if = input file
of = output file
bs = block size in byte (1M = 1MByte)
count = how many blocks you want to save

saving data to a file:
dd if=/dev/sda of=/home/user/mp3.img bs=1M count=5
(writes first 5MB to file mp3.img)

restoring saved data to the player:
dd if=/home/user/mp3.img of=/dev/sda
(writes the whole content of file mp3.img to the player)

So, uploading firmware is just a matter of a chunk of data in the usb drive??? THAT easy?? Cool!

It this is correct, why aren't the tools ported to unix/linux?? I don't use windows, and I'd like to save/modify/restore my f/w!!
