I'd like to know that too! Very good question!

I can help with this information:
one mpeg file with 50mb becomes a 65mb files in MTV (96*64, 16fps, 128kbps mp3)
IPOD sucks... Apple sucks! They tried to turn my PC into a MAC! argh!!!!

similar file in AMV takes aprox. 6mb.
MTV have a better quality than AMV
example:
Code: Select all
source : Crazy Frog - Popcorn / mpeg-2 / 2min 46sec   - 57 288 924 bytes
MTV  96x64 all setings to max -  35 570 176 bytes
AMV  96x64 all setings to max -  6 641 402 bytes

Lopes,

It would be good if you could cite the audio codecs, framerate(FPS) and relosutions after and before transforming to mtv.

misioslaw,

Why is the AMV "lower quality" ? Does it use another video encoder? Is the audio quality and framerate(FPS) the same?

Ok i installed both converters: MTV & AMV

ORIGINAL MPEG FILE:
Cranberries - Zombie.mpg
FPS: 29.84
RES: 352x240
1150kbps

Audio MP3: 224kbps

Size: 50,6MB

-----------------------
Results...

MTV
Cranberries - Zombie.mtv
FPS: 16 (high)
RES: 96x64
MP3: 128kbps
SIZE: 62,1MB

AMV
Cranberries - Zombie.amv
FPS: (high)*
RES: 96x64
MP3: *
SIZE: 11,3MB
* don't know exactly

This is a huge diference!

Join our fight to correct the bug on fw 3.2.16 to let us to upgrade our players and join AMV!

misioslaw,

INTERESTING! :) Thanks ...

How could you render the pictures ??

Is there any codec we can use to play/render AMV and MTV files?

I would like to know what kind of codec runs on the mp4 players ...

KEWWW ... i thought our brave atj2085 and his ...errr.... humble "havard DSP" would never be able to render a compressed video codec ...

I get AMV frame from AMVPlayer included in "MP3 Player Utilities v.3.57"
MTV frame i rip manually in raw format, i get only first frame. MTV is difficult do this takes me 2 days.

AMV have a structure similar to AVI (without using FOURCC for codec and modified header)

Very good!

Compared to AMV, MTV is a loosless format!

This mean that our 20MHz processor can decode mp3 and a video codec in real time?!! :)

I will throw my athlon 2.4GHz away and plug all cables in my cheap mp4 :D

You can see quite clearly that the AMV frame comes from a compressed format. It is sort of subdivided into squares. This is typical of video compression.

It is quite possible that the player's processor can handle a simple compression scheme. Let me say that again: "simple" compression scheme. I'd say the video size is small enough, and the frame rate low enough, and as for the sound, all it has to do is feed the mp3 data to the DSP.

My guess is that each frame is decoded to a memory space, and then the screen is updated to that buffer. This would be efficient enough for a small processor like the ATJ2085.

MTV is a lossless video format, which means you have all the frames as individual uncompressed pictures. The quality of MTV is better, but I would say the trade off of the AMV format is worth it for what you save in disk space.

If you still don't understand the difference between MTV and AMV, this might help:

MTV is like a .bmp picture (large file, good quality)
AMV is like a .jpg picture (some loss of quality in favor of smaller file size)

All I know about DMV is that the frame rate is lower than MTV...

The next step is to find out more information about the video codec used...

for DMV/MTV format, we have this tool:
http://www.burgers-transition-site.de/d ... thertools/

@Lopes
It can be more than 20 mhz!

# 24 bits DSP with on-chip DSU
# 8-bit Z80 CPU core with on-chip DSU (run at 24.576MHz(TYP), up to 60MHz - software controlled)

I guess battery drains VERY fast when viewing amv files!

I know that, I was just kidding!

Good observation you did! More consumption for AMV files.
