Crackly voice recording Sumvision M18 (1gb)

Postby robinpc » Mon Aug 24, 2009 9:59 pm

Sound quality of my SumvisionM18 (3 yrs old) is superb apart from the microphone recording which (besides the 8k frequency limit) has a bad crackling. Can be heard with my voice here:

And with my ?piano?(huh!) here:

I am wondering is this is normal with S1 or with Sumvisions. I suspect it is mechanical fault of mic. Isn't it unlikely that just that bit of the software/firmware has got mangled?
If I bought another M18 might it have a better mic? Or can the mic be replaced easy enough?
Thanks.

I've since established that it is not a fault of the microphone--I unsoldered it (tiddly thing) and substituted another mic; no change. At least I successfully soldered it back and so now works as before. So it's a hardware problem unless for some reason the firmware can cause this crackly distortion (faulty digitising) in the sound. Curiously the radio doesnt have the same fault even though that must also convert to digital. Maybe 2 separate digitators (whatever theyre called).
Does anyone know? I would be most grateful.
