Well, on the mailing list we have had a suggestion, I'll copy it here:
The idea is that there are several different version of some key operating system files, and they are labeled F644, F321 and F641.
The theory is that they all have a maximum size to them, so if you flash your player, and it decides to use the F641 files, it will not support more than (for example) 64MB, even if your Hardware (memory chip) supports 1GB.
we don't know everthing about it, it may even be wrong what we think here, but it's an idea nonetheless.

Have the codebase differences been identified yet?
That is, a list of all subroutines that are effected by the flash change.
